This is not a subtle song; it's a blunt chronicle of the horror of war, free of metaphor and artifice. I can't decide whether this makes it didactic or gutsy, but it's got a catchy tune and Thompson sings it with such intensity that you can almost taste the terror. I think it would be even better without the band--just Thompson and his guitar might make it even more powerful.
